The Press-Enterprise in Riverside C.A. -- an A.H. Belo property has given its auto reviews entirely over to a competitor website which does the auto review, and the paper publishes it and tells readers to to watch it on the InstantRiverside.com website Very interesting way to get rid of your other auto editor and replace him for free!

I don't think this is just an issue of newspapers not wanting to pay for the AP. It's also about newspapers increasingly seeing the AP as part of the problem, due to its deals with Yahoo and other online outlets. Newspapers are beginning to feel, in one editor's opinion, like the wire service for the wire service, watching their locally produced content get picked up by the AP for discount resale to their online competitors, and they're not getting much in return.

Those interested might find the discussion at RecoveringJournalist worth reading; it's at http://tinyurl.com/66qch3

I don't think AP has anything to worry about. Some small papers can get away without AP, but major papers need it big time for national/international news and filler material. The Trib's decision is foolish. I think they are bargaining for a better rate, and then they'll reup before the two years is done.

AP would most likely use stringers to cover the smaller markets, although coverage and reliability are questionable in such an arrangement. Given the number of laid-off journalists looking for work these days, though, there are doubtless some efficiencies AP could realize by setting up freelance arrangements as an alternative to relying upon member newspapers. Community newspapers are another possible source.

The comments on Alan Mutter's posting on the AP are particularly interesting, and I recommend them. I think there is some belief that AP is going to move in staff to these cities once their arrangements with the local paper expire, but I doubt that will be the case. Is there really enough daily news emerging from Spokane to warrant putting a full-time AP staff there, or in some of these other cities. Minneapolis is a toss-up. How many stories have you read in the last year that had a Minneapolis dateline? So the AP is going to end up with holes. I don't think this is a bluff by the newspapers, but a real cry of pain. AP needs these newspapers more than these newspapers need AP, as print is going local-local-local.
